How to grow coffee

A native of Africa, the Coffee arabica tree is known to produce some of the highest quality coffee in the world.

The Coffee tree is very easy to grow and makes a great indoor tree as it can thrive in places with low-level lighting. This lush tree flourishes indoors with temperatures between 18-25C. The Coffee tree’s intensely white, fragrant flowers will blossom in spring and then the ruby-red coffee 'cherries' begin to ripen in summer.

To produce your own home-grown coffee, all you need to do is follow a few simple steps as soon as you see the glossy coffee cherries become red, ripe and ready!

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Pick each cherry and remove the sweet outer pulp and the outer husk around the bean (this is made easiest by soaking your cherry crop – the skins should come right off!) and then leave your beans to dry naturally in sunlight for up to 14 days – or until hardened and dehydrated.

  1. Once thoroughly dried, the coffee beans should be roasted. This can be done by toasting them in a clean frying pan over a medium heat for 5-8 minutes. The colour should change from a light, greenish brown to a deep, chocolate colour.

  1. After 5 minutes over a medium heat, you will begin to hear a light ‘crack’, this indicates that your coffee will be palatable from this point onwards. You may wish to remove from the heat now or continue to roast on a low heat for a deeper flavour.

  1. Rinse the roasted beans through a metal colander to remove any stray outer husks and leave to cool. Allow to stand overnight and then place into an airtight container, ready to be freshly ground every morning. Enjoy!
